He was a guy no one knew about in the draft back in 2000. If this former Heisman winner can continue to make many more big plays this season, I think he is well on his way to being NFL Rookie of the Year. In my opinion, for the rest of the regular season, it will be interesting to see how the opponents will game plan against Newton and how Newton will respond to the variation of defensive plays that are geared toward preventing him from throwing or even scoring touchdowns.
Opposing defenders better take notice and defensive coordinators better not relax too much or even sleep at night because this young man can be every defense's worst nightmare. It is scary to think that after one amazing game, that this dynamic player could be even better with more experience. In this game, Newton showed his ability to be accurate when throwing in the pocket and his potential to be a great quarterback in the future. We all knew that he had the athleticism to give defenders problems but we questioned his ability to be an accurate quarterback. This guy is going to be a force to be reckoned with. He may not have gotten his team to victory but in his first game, he made a statement to the rest of the league. Cam Newton set a new record by completing 24 out of 37 passes for 422 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception on the road against the Arizona Cardinals. Back then, Peyton completed 21 out of 37 passes for 302 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions against the Miami Dolphins in Indianapolis. Believe it or not, after a rough preseason, the number one overall pick shocked the world on Sunday and proved everyone wrong by shattering an NFL rookie quarterback record which was once held by Peyton Manning back in 1998.
